D for Diabetes?

By Lynsay Ryan
Vitamin D may protect the pancreas from diabetes in people who are at high risk for the disease because their blood sugar levels are above normal.            Researchers assigned 92 adults with predieabetes to take vitamin D, calcium, both, or a placebo. Then they measured how well beta cells in the pancreas secreted insulin.

Fruit, Not Juice

By Lynsay Ryan
"Don't drink your calories" is a good advice if you're trying to watch your weight, even if it's fruit juice you're drinking.

Summers coming to an end!

By Deborah Kulmer
We are on the edge of wrapping up summer.  I for one welcome fall!  Hopefully cooler temps are on the horizon.   It has been an awfully HOT summer!   The fall of the year is a great time to reassess your fitness goals and make a plan for reaching new ones.  Cooler temps will allow us to get off the treadmill and the couch.

This is your brain, this is your brain on Doritos

By Angela Levesque
Many of us remember that commercial from our youth; the graphic portrayal of the brain as an egg being fried in a frying pan.  Most people would agree that drugs can be harmful to the brain and nervous system, but how many think twice before eating a bag of MSG laden chips.  MSG or Monosodium glutamate is often dubbed as the additive in Chinese food, but MSG is found in most processed foods.  Even if the label doesn’t specifically say MSG, it is often cleverly disguise by other names.

A room with a view

By Lori Beveridge
It's the last weekend of summer and on Saturday I lead our weekly run at Quicksilver Almaden.  The trail is hilly, challenging and breathtakingly beautiful.  I may hate the first 10 minutes or so, but I am never sorry I went.  My daughter Erin has a blog and she has inspired me to share the things in life that make me smile.  I am not a great athlete, but a passionate one.  My run was slow and easy and at the half way point (about 5 miles up) I took a stunning picture of the valley below.  Low clouds, sun breaking through and I was grateful I was alive.
