It's time to get uncomfortable

Where are you today in your new year's goals?  Did you make any changes?  Did you try something one time but because it was out of your comfort zone, you decided not to try it again?  Is it easier to just sit at home and watch TV because that's the comfortable thing to do?  Are you still eating the same things because it's comforting to your taste buds?  Most of the time we never reach our goals because it makes us go out of our comfort zones and it's uncomfortable.  There's a little bit of pain....a little bit of anxiety....a little bit of fear.....a little bit of worry.....the risk of failing.  So rather than push through all those feelings and emotions, we stay where we are at because it's safe.  I started thinking about this after a potential client contacted me via my Betterfly profile.  She wanted information on my class - asked if it was easy to pick up - said she was very out of shape and desperately wants to get in shape but doesn't want to feel uncomfortable because she is out of shape.  Notice the key words: easy, uncomfortable. She wants something easy and comfortable to get her body in shape.  Guess what?  That's impossible.  Bringing change in our lives is not comfortable...if it was easy, there would be no need for self-help books, no life coaches, no personal trainers, etc.  When we start moving our body when it's used to just sitting and vegging out, it's going to respond and talk to us with some sore muscles, the feeling of being out of breath, and a few other symptoms.  If we have weak ab muscles & start using them, they are going to be sore and it's going to be a little painful.  When we incoporate walking lunges into our routine, the quads are going to be sore and it might be a little challenging to get up off the couch the next day.  In order to get our body into shape, we WILL have to push outside of our comfort zone and experience a little bit of soreness.  When we face our relationship with food and discover that emotions, addictions, and relationships can cause us to use food for a drug instead of fuel, it's going to make us uncomfortable.  Walking into a group exercise class and feeling unfit and out of shape can make us feel uncomfortable.  Going to a Zumba class for the first time can feel intimidating.  Being real and honest and open with our thoughts, feelings and relationships can be very uncomfortable.  Facing the realization that our choices dictate our lives, our purpose, our career, our relationships, and our future can be very daunting and overwhelming.  I get that and I realize because I face it in my own life.... BUT......are you going to let that stop you from being all you can be?  Is it more important for you to feel comfortable than to reach for your dreams, your hopes, your desires?  If you don't get uncomforable today, how are you going to feel ten years from now?  You're going to have the thoughts of, "I wish.....if only.....I regret...."  Don't make yourself have to face those regrets, sorrows, health issues, and missed opportunities -- get up, make the changes, and get uncomfortable!!!!  I promise you won't regret it....the feelings of success and accomplishment will totally outweigh the inital feelings of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Your ability to feel the negative emotions and feelings is a good thing....don't numb them by staying in your comfort zone.  Your ability to feel will allow you to feel all the positive emotions and feelings, as well; and those WILL come with you choosing to get uncomfortable. Go ahead...try it!

Angela Prather

Hi...I have always enjoyed health and fitness but did not decide to make a career of it until I was going back to school for a degree in teaching. While attending college, I began working at the YMCA, going to workshop/trainings, teaching classes, etc. I finished my degree in Elementary Education but decided to pursue a career in health and wellness. I have recently moved to TN and am excited about this venture in my life to continue encouraging people to pursue healthy lifestyles.
