I remember when my kids were little, and everyone was using the yellow cherrio dispensers to keep their kids satisfied and occupied, I was giving my kids small pieces of fresh fruit to keep them happy. Mashed vegetables were high on the menu list from the sign of their first teeth! I was raised in a farming community, where everyone had a garden in the back yard and all moms canned and froze fresh vegetables and fruit. I can still recall the musky, sweet, smell of the barn at the fruit farmer's orchard and accompanying my mother to get the bushel baskets of ripe peaches, pears, apples, etc. The purchased gems were placed on newspaper on our cellar floor to finish ripening and then peeled, poached and packed into hot glass jars to be stored and savored throughout the winter months. This was heady stuff! I was raised on fruits and vegetables and farm raised, free range meat. I have carried on this healthy practice with my own children. They love and live for the fruits and vegetables. Salad is a normal selection off any menu for them. I have taught them well. Teaching your kids healthy eating habits is part of being a good mother's job. Starting from day one.
