Physiotherapy is a very important form of treatment used during the rehabilitation of people suffering from physical body impairments. Several techniques of physiotherapy are employed to help alleviate the pain in a region, but these vary greatly from each physiotherapist. This is because each therapist will have their own techniques of stimulations and while some may prefer manual muscle massage others will opt for other stimulation techniques like feather therapy. Feather therapy involves stimulating the muscles and other sensory organs with the help of soft feathers which tickle the skin resulting in muscle reactions.
Here are some common aspects of physiotherapy:
The primary job of a physiotherapist is to offer physical therapy to a person who may be suffering from certain medical conditions. There are several medical conditions like paralysis and stroke which require the patient to continue exercising their body muscles in order to maintain the blood flow and overall health. If the people lose the ability to move their limbs, it would result in deterioration of their health. At the same time, the muscles need to be exercised on a daily basis in order to retain their strength and posture. Unless someone assists the patient in exercising their muscles, they are likely to lose total functionality and senses in the affected limbs. A physical therapist helps the patient to exercise by moving the muscles in their body thus allowing them to stretch and maintain joint flexibility.
Neurological Stimulation Therapist
After a person experiences a trauma due to some accident in their life, chances are there that they can lose sensory abilities. But studies have proven that some very simple stimulation therapies are capable of re-establishing sensory and neurological connection between the brain and the affected parts of the body. Feather therapy is one such technique used by the physiotherapist to re-establish or rebuild new connections between the brain and the affected body part. In certain situations, the patient may retain the sense but lose their ability to move the limb. In such cases, soft feathers can be used to help the patient regain these connections. This is a form of therapy commonly used on people suffering from head and back injuries in which cases the therapy helps realign the broken and damaged connections.
It is often presumed that physiotherapists are mainly linked to injuries and accidents and they work with patients suffering from some medical condition. This is not true, since the therapists are also hired to provide relaxation exercise and first-aid to sports professionals. This makes physiotherapy a very common professionin different sports disciplines. The physiotherapists work constantly with sportsmen and help them retain their fitness and achieve their goals.
Physiotherapy for normal people
Physiotherapists are also consulted by normal people very often. This is because they assist you in meeting certain targets regarding the movement and maintenance of the body which is very important for everyone and not only the injured and the hurt. Simply having another person stretch and pull your limbs can help you identify positions which you may experience pressure. The use of physical therapist in the world of sports as well as everyday life has changed the way they are looked at since they not only help medically challenged people but also normal professionals.
The physiotherapist is a very important professional in society and plays a vital role in our lives since they specialize in the relaxation and exercise of body muscles which is important for maintaining our regular fitness and health. There are many people suffering from different medical conditions that are too minute to be realized such as back pain, shoulder pain and pain in the joints. A professional physiotherapist can help them regain health.

Sudden cardiac arrest never comes with prior notice. It can happen anytime and at anywhere, which made heart diseases one of the most traumatic health issues where patient passes away even before receiving proper treatment. One of the best ways to deal this critical problem is through CPR or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. A survey states that 92% of cardiac arrest couldn’t be treated because very few people are aware of CPR, which reduces the chances of survivability for the victim. The use of CPR dates back to 1740, but it is quite surprising that a large percentage of people are still not aware about its working.
You do not have to be a medical expert to learn CPR as anybody can master this skill and get certified in the practice, even through online classes. Age is never a factor for cardiac disease; so your knowledge can save life of anyone who is in need.
How does it work?
This rescue procedure is implemented by compressing chests for a number of times by blowing air into a victim's lungs, when heart stops working. CPR helps in supplying blood and oxygen to the brain, even when lungs fail to function. The process should be continued till the victim reaches a hospital and receive proper life support. Usually, brain damage begins within 4-6 minutes and it takes nearly 10-12 minutes for the emergency medical services (EMS) to reach and start rescue operation. In the mean time, CPR can be the best way to deal with the circumstance. The more the number of experts in crisis, the better it is because the process is tiring. Hence, if one gets tired, others can continue to provide support.
There are a number of online safety courses, offering you an opportunity to learn first aid and other life saving techniques. However, to learn CPR you need to attend classes and have practical knowledge of the entire process. Online classes can teach you the steps but to be proficient, hand on practice with proper guidance from a certified instructor is way better.
- Usually people think, the only process of implementing CPR is through mouth to mouth breathing. This is a myth because the process can be done in other ways too. If you are not comfortable putting your mouth on victims, continue chest compression, until emergency services arrives. Preferably, bag mask or mouth to mask is used by the health professionals. So, if you are not having these tools use "hands-only" CPR as an alternative to CPR with exchange of breaths.
- Some believe CPR is the only way to deal with cardiac arrest. This is again a myth because this process can only delay death. Hence, survival of the victim depends on proper medical care, which required to be implemented as soon as possible.
- To think CPR as a harmful technique is a wrong idea once again. This is the only way to keep send blood and oxygen to brain. So, proper chest compression should be fast and very hard. At times, ribs of victims break due to strong compression, but that can get healed once they are out of danger.
Children learning CPR
Be is old our young, CPR is a first aid protocol that should be learnt by all and children need to know it as well. Apart from cardiac arrest, this process can even bring back an individual to normal state from a situation where the victim is unable to breathe due to choking, electrocution or near-drowning. Children are exposed to accidents more because of their inquisitive nature.
Though sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack is not common with children, but what if your child experience a situation where an individual need CPR. Your child can save the victim and prevent death. They can even be taught about resuscitating someone during an emergency or tackled such a serious situation by helping people who are applying CPR. But it is necessary for the child to understand the importance of the process to learn it.
You can always call 911 to help but if CPR can save someone’s life, learning it becomes essential. It is not necessary to be a specialist or a medical expert to get trained, which makes this life saving technique an important process that can be implemented by all.
“Oh! That child behaves so weirdly.” These are the words uttered by so many people who don't know what autism is, on seeing an autistic kid. They often look down on kids with autism, thinking that autism is a mental illness. For parents of autistic children, dealing with that part of the population, which is full of misunderstandings about the disorder, becomes a tough job.
Parents of children with autism, are always ready to fight for their kids, sometimes with the school systems and sometimes with other parents who think their kids are like that because of bad parenting. They want to tell so much to the world about their children, who may be a bit different, but are awesome in their own way.
Here are 6 things that every parent of an autistic child wants you to know:
1. Autism is NOT any mental illness
A large number of people have the misunderstanding that a child with autism is mentally ill. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with repetitive and restricted behaviors, communication problems and social impairments. It is not any mental illness. Treatment for autism involves behavioral therapies along with medications. An effective option for treatment of the disorder is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which makes use of hyperbaric chambers.
2. Autistic kids want to feel included and be social
Kids with this disorder want to socialize and play just like other kids. They want outings and friendships but often have problems in connecting with other kids. They may need help from adults in social situations. You are likely to notice in most cases that autistic children lack social grace.
3. Autistic children do not lack intelligence
Do not be fooled by the poor social skills of children with this disorder. These kids can learn as well as retain loads of information, sometimes even more than other children. However, one major factor that differentiates these kids with other kids is that, they take things literally, as their mids work in a different way. So, if someone tells them “hold your horses”, they would be searching horses to hold.
Such children can also understand you well. They may not be able to express themselves properly, but they do understand spoken language.
4. These children are affectionate, receive and give love
Autistic children need and want attention and love. They have the emotion of love in them. Just like other children, they enjoy closeness, will kiss and cuddle. Such children feel deeply, and build loving and longlasting attachments.
5. They are affected by the world around them
You may notice such children covering their ears while walking. You may find them reacting to sounds and loud noises like flushing of toilets or ringing of bells. Do not think these behaviors are merely overreactions. Such noises affect the systems of these kids. For autistic children, these noises are like a tornado with roaring sound.
6. Behavior of autistic children is not a result of bad parenting
People who don't know much about the disorder may think that such a kid just needs to be punished by his parents for his bad behavior. Such thinking is wrong. Autism is far more complex than good or bad behavior. Parents of such kids do not ignore bad behavior. Every behavior of a child with autism is a way in which he communicates. Some kids run around when tired whereas others throw tantrums when overwhelmed or scared. Always remember that parents know their children best, and this is true in the case of autistic children too. So, trust that an autistic kid's parents deal with their child's behavior in the way that is right for the child.
Besides understanding these things about autism and autistic kids, parents of autistic children want you to see their kids as children first, and then as children with autism. Things will be much easy for such parents if the world knows the above things about the disorder and understands children with autism better.
Many people who work and live in the London, Ontario area may know Dr. Cathy Frank as the experienced and smiling physician who works at the SOFT (Southern Ontario Fertility Technologies) fertility clinic. Many people, especially those in fertility medicine, may also know her as former Chief of the OB/GYN department at St. Thomas Hospital and the challenging path that she took to become a doctor.
However, in colouring a profile of Dr. Frank, what’s often left out of her character description is another particularly remarkable quality of hers – namely, her belief that all responsible, caring couples deserve the right to conceive a child, regardless of their sexual orientation. Many people in her community may not be aware that Dr. Frank is well-known in the gay and lesbian circles for her acceptance and her belief that all couples, regardless if they are same sex or not, deserve full medical access and the right to conceive and raise a child. Dr. Frank is candid about her open, welcoming attitude, and she does not shy away from the fact that she is equally accepting of transgender couples.
We sat down with Dr. Cathy Frank to discuss her relationship as a fertility doctor to gay and lesbian couples and where her values and acceptance stem from.
Thank you very much, Dr. Frank, for taking the time to speak with us.
Dr. Cathy Frank: Absolutely, it’s my pleasure.
You may already know that you as a doctor, as well as the SOFT clinic, have become fairly well-known for your acceptance of same sex couples as patients. Do you know if most other fertility clinics share your same attitude?
Dr. Cathy Frank: To be honest, I can’t comment on whether or not other clinics share our view. I know that the ability for same sex couples to receive help from fertility clinics is becoming easier, which is truly a blessing to hear. But, at the same time, I also know as a physician that a lot of work still needs to be done to make sure that these couples are treated no differently than everyone else when it comes to medical access.
Based on my understanding, as a physician, you have always had a very accepting view of different sexual orientations and are not afraid to defend and uphold the medical rights of gay and lesbians. Is there any particular reason you can ascribe to your attitude?
Dr. Cathy Frank: You know, I don’t think my views can be attributed to any one particular reason or explanation. And to be honest, I haven’t given it a whole lot of thought. I’ve never had any issues with people who have different sexual orientations. And the idea that there would be some moral problem because a same sex couple wants to have a child is, in my mind, absurd. Regardless if the couple is the same sex or not, if both partners in the relationship are responsible and are able to love and take care of a child – that’s what counts, not whether or not they’re of a different sex.
Do you think this view of yours has something to do with your upbringing?
Dr. Cathy Frank: Yes, you know I think so. As a child, my parents taught methat everyone deserves to be treated with the same amount of respect and understanding, regardless of how different they are or seem. And I think I’ve carried that basic philosophy with me throughout my adulthood.
I mentioned in another article that another reason why I do not judge same sex couples, or transgenders for that matter, is that when I was pregnant with my first child, which happened when I was quite young, I was the object of prejudice several times, and that stuck with me. I never would want to make a patient of mine feel the way I felt when people were casting judgment on me when I was pregnant.
That’s very interesting. Is there anything you can provide that will give the readers a better understanding of just how frequently you help same sex couples conceive?
Dr. Cathy Frank: Well, at the risk of misstating some facts, I can’t comment on frequency. But, I do know that the SOFT clinic, which is where I’m working at currently, has assisted slightly over 700 same sex couples. The most common are female couples, though we have also helped male couples. As you may know, it’s more difficult for male couples to have a child, primarily because they have to find a willing female surrogate. But, helping male couples is possible and we have done it before.
Thank you very much, Dr. Frank, this has been very informative. Are there any other closing comments you would like to make?
Dr. Cathy Frank: You’re welcome, and yes, I just want to say how excited I am to be working in fertility medicine. Obstetrics and delivering babies has always been my passion, from day one of being a doctor. But, giving patients, regardless if they’re same sex or not, renewed hope in being able to conceive a child – that’s just as special. I love giving new hope to couples and I look forward to doing it for many more years to come.
There is much to be said when it comes to both the value and success rate of vasectomy surgeries. For couples who do want to have any more children and who do not want to continue the use of other forms of birth control, a vasectomy can be a fairly simple and effective birth control alternative. For those not familiar with the procedure, in a vasectomy operation, the vasa deferentia of the patient, which are the tubes used to carry sperm to the seminal stream, are severed, tied or sealed, which effectively renders the male patient infertile.
Here’s the good news about vasectomy procedures. They take as little as 20 to 30 minutes to perform; they can be done either by a urologist or family doctor; and in most cases, the procedure only results in mild discomfort or swelling in the patient that lasts a day or two. The not so good news, however, is that vasectomy procedures permanently sterilize the male patient, a fact that every medical practitioner should communicate to every patient who’s considering having a vasectomy done.
With that said, a caveat has to be made when communicating the permanent effect of a vasectomy procedure. As it were, a vasectomy procedure can be reversed and a male patient can return to being fertile.
Performing a vasectomy reversal involves reconnecting the vasa deferentia that were cut during the vasectomy procedure. Sounds simple enough. Unfortunately, the physical nature of these vasa deferentia makes the surgery incredibly tricky. Think of tiny wet noodles and you’ll have an accurate idea of what vasa deferentia are like. Now think of trying to successfully reattach these vasa deferentia so that they are functioning again by carrying sperm to the seminal stream. Not easy. Indeed, asuccessful vasectomy reversal procedure often requires a much more trained and experienced surgeon. The success of this procedure is significantly improved by using an operating microscope that magnifies structures from five to forty times their actual size.
Dr. Victor Mak is the current Chief of Urology at Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill, Ontario. With over ten years of experience as a urologist, he also happens to provide a guiding voice on the topic of vasectomy reversals. He advises that while the use of the micro surgical vasectomy reversal technique can be highly successful in restoring a man’s fertility, the success rate is not 100%. Dr. Mak also highlights a second point that’s important to consider in a patient’s decision process when it comes to having a vasectomy reversal: the success rate of a vasectomy reversal steadily declines as more time passes following the original vasectomy operation.
Dr. Mak neatly encapsulates what vasectomy patients should consider, “I’ve always advised my patients that they really need to think about what they truly want as far as family planning, both in the short and long term, before having a vasectomy. Yes, a vasectomy can be reversed. But,a patient needs to know that reversing a vasectomy is more complicated and the success cannot be guaranteed. So, just because a vasectomy can be reversed doesn’t mean that the decision to have the operation should be any less thought out and carefully considered.”
Dr. Victor Mak is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Urologic Surgery. He has a Masters of Science degree in Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto, and is a Clinician Investigator with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Mak is one of only a handful of urologists in Canada with formal post-graduate fellowship training in the subspecialty field of male reproduction, andrology/sexual function and microsurgery of the genito-urinary tract. He has published widely in major international clinical and basic science journals. Dr. Mak is Consultant Urologist for Mon Sheong Long Term Care Facility and is Chief of Urology, Department of Surgery, at Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill.
Children love to play in water no matter the season. Bath time is filled with giggling, smiling and splashing. Registering for our Sugarland swim program can help prevent the attacks along with medication and improved overall health.

They are either under-weight, not as strong as children of the same age or obese as addressed above. Swimming in the development and building muscles. It makes your child more flexible and agile by strengthening the tissues and supporting bones with strong muscles. Fit bodies are resistant to injury and fight diseases and even common viruses for better health overall.
Body shape - The shape of our bodies is a direct reflection of how we maintain them. Swimming is an excellent activity to give our bodies an attractive strong shape. It broadens and strengthens the shoulder structure and improves posture which protects our bones as we age. Children in regular swim training typically enjoy these benefits to the body shape and stature.
Safety - Apart from above heath issues, safety is yet another major reason for learning swimming. Statistics have proved that drowning is one of the most common causes of death, especially among children. Without warning, children may play near a pond or a pool without supervision. Unless they are trained in how to stay afloat and the tactics to save themselves or someone else, tragedy is imminent. Preparation is the key to prevent such a disaster.
The social benefits of swimming make it a great fit for children of all personalities. While learning to work together, children in swim training are also rewarded for individual achievement. They learn to cheer each other on as, one by one, they conquer their fear of the water and begin to master navigating it with ease. Your child will learn discipline, patience and foster a healthy competitive spirit as an athletic swimmer that will benefit them far beyond the waters. As their concentration and coordination skills grow, the benefits of regular swimming will be evident in the ways they become more able to relax. Regular exercise, like swimming, causes children to be less moody and more serene. It also allows your child to enjoy other recreational activities like surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and so on. On hot and humid summer days, swimming is an excellent way to cool down. If you take your child camping, both of you can have fun playing in lake. This is one activity that your kids will most certainly continue for a lifetime. There is no better way to promote safety, healthy, and a lifetime of fitness in your children.
These and many more are such good reasons to swim. With swim training you can harness an existing love for water play and turn it into skills that will keep your children safe, healthy and confident in the water, and in life.
