YOLO is an acronym for "You Only Live Once". It was originally coined over 100 years ago but in recent times it has been used by the younger generations as an excuse for stupid and reckless behavior. The Washington Post and The Huffington Post describe it as the "newest acronym you'll love to hate". YOLO is similar to carpe diem or memento mori, it implies that one should enjoy life, even if that entails taking risks.
We have one body and one life, once our life is over there are no do overs, no second chances. So since You Only Live Once why not respect your body and take care of it. They are amazing pieces of equipment and the things that they can do are limitless. Stop filling it with foods that not only hold no nutritonal value but actually cause harm to your body. Stop making excuse as to why you don't exercise...no time, too hot, too cold, kids, husband, work...the excuses are endless, but your life is not. You don't have to belong to a gym or a club (although it is more fun to workout with others), all you need is a good pair of gym shoes, your body and where ever you are standing.
Here is my take on YOLO. You Only Live Once, so make the most of it. Be healthy enough to be adventurous. Be healthy enough to live a life free of pain. Be healthy enough to do all the things you have been wishing you could do. Invest in your future so that you only have to go to the doctor for your yearly check up. Invest in yourself so that you you don't spend every day filling your body with medications for high blood presure, high cholesterol, diabetes... Invest in yourself and be healthy enough so that when you look back on your life it will not be filled with "I wish I would have..."
YOLO - instead of letting it be used for stupid, reckless behavior, let it be used as a reason to spend your life being healthy and active. Doing the things you have always wanted to do but haven't been able. Use it to get outside of your comfort zone and be adventurous. Go hiking and climb a mountain you have only admired from a far. Get on a bike to see what the world around you holds. Go run down the beach and see all that lies before you.
You Only Live Once so why not live it to the fullest.
