Mark your workouts on your calendar. They are one of the most important appointments you could keep! Don’t skip your pre-paid classes or the gym you’re paying for every month. Think of the money you’re wasting! Avoid winter blues/ depression. When you exercise your body releases chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins make you feel good. Regular exercise has been proven to: Reduce stress Ward off anxiety Boost self-esteem Improve sleep Aside from decreasing your chance of getting heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some kinds of cancer, exercise can also boost your immune system. Buy new fitness gear. New stuff makes you want to get out and workout. You just feel good. Download new, upbeat music. You’ll be so pumped to workout to your new energizing beats. Getting to your workout is the hardest part. The biggest reward is finishing. You feel energized, accomplished and stress free to name a few benefits. Write in a journal as to how you feel after completing a session. Support from family and friends are important to maintaining an exercise program. Post on Facebook when you plan to workout or after you’ve completed a session. Posting keeps you accountable in a public way. Get a workout buddy. You’ll be less apt to blow-off a workout. Make a spring fitness goal like losing weight, entering a road race or a Tough Mudder. Buy some home fitness equipment. You can buy inexpensive things like dumbbells or DVDs. If you have a more dispensable income, you can purchase things like a treadmill or elliptical. If you’re strapped for cash, use On Demand. You can find things like yoga, strength conditioning, kickboxing and Zumba – to name a few options. If you have the income, plan a vacation at the beach. A tropical trip is a nice break from the cold weather. Wearing a bathing suit is also a motivator to stay in shape. Use an online program application to chart your fitness such as nikerunning.com. After sticking to your goals, treat yourself to rewards which are not food. Some rewards could be a pedicure or a new running shirt. Dump the baggy clothes and wear more fitted outfits. You can’t see positive changes in your body by hiding in loose clothing. You will be more motivated to hit the gym when you can see the true you. There is also a subconscious association between baggy clothes and lounging. Instead of eating comfort foods, stick with broth based soups with lots of vegetables and lean protein. You’ll feel healthier. Enjoy winter activities. Some really fun winter activities are skiing, snow shoeing, sledding, cross-country skiing and skating. Look at the season in a positive light. Wear colorful clothing. Many people wear black and grey clothes which can be depressing. Colorful clothing can lift your mood! Meditate for 10 minutes a day. Set an intention to workout that day, Try a new workout class each week. Look for a class that seems fun or intriguing.
