Xarelto, also commonly referred to as rivaroxaban, is one of the latest anticoagulants in the market. This drug is an oral medication that has been developed with the sole purpose prevention of dangerous blood clots which may constrict flow of blood to vital organs within the body. Unlike most previous anticoagulant drugs which required specific does, these blood thinners are prescribed in a uniform dose.
Xarelto, like most drugs is not full proof. It has its own side effects which if not checked can cost the user quite a great deal. One of the most severe of xarelto side effects is uncontrollable bleeding. It makes perfect sense that a blood thinner would be associated with uncontrollable bleeding.
If there occurs heavy bleeding near a major organ, for instance the kidneys, lungs or brain, blood flowing to that organ will be interrupted thus causing the organ to lose some of its functions. In addition to this, pools of blood within your body may result in a variety of health risks. Brain bleeds are the most deadly. To make matters worse, the drug does not have an antidote for these bleeds.
According to research, these kinds of bleeds may cause a number of related problems such as easy bruising and eventually, they may lead to death. In case you take these drugs with other forms of medication, you will be putting yourself at greater risk.
Another example of Xarelto side effects is epidural and spinal blood clots. Patients on Xarelto, might be put at higher risk of developing clots during certain circumstances. For instance, patients who are receiving spinal anesthetic may form a blood clot around the spinal cord or brain. This type of clot is a very serious one and may lead to long term paralysis, brain damage or even stroke.
In some cases, Xarelto is given to patients as a prophylactic with the purpose of prevention of pulmonary embolism and deep-vein thrombosis. This is mostly the case for patients undergoing total hip or knee arthroplasty. According to research, administering xarelto after such as surgery tends to result in higher rates of complications with wounds. This is not the case when the arthroplasty patients are prophylactically treated using molecular weight heparin, DVT compression pumps, compressions stockings or aspirin.
If not checked properly, wound complications as a result of arthroplasty Xarelto may cause prolonged and excessive drainage. In some cases it may also cause infection, leakage or hematoma. If use of the drug continues regardless of the side effects, the long term effects include site specific chronic pain and reduced range of motion.
Xarelto is one of the different types of blood thinner drugs referred to as Factor Xa Inhibitors. As thus, its side effects are intensified if taken together with a number of other drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, heparin, rifampin, conivaptan, warafin among others. If you are taking any of these drugs or supplements, you need to inform your doctor before you take your Xarelto medication.
