For over 2 years my wife has been asking me to go get my eyes checked because I apparently am always squinting when reading or working on my laptop. So in the spirit of health and wellness I decided that it was a perfect time to get it done and boy was I in for a surprise.
The quality of vision that I had become accustomed to was no where near what my vision should be and the initial exam was a very humbling experience. My left eye was off the charts and has a very bad stigmatism which really concerned the doctor. I was just absolutely amazed with how much clearer I could see with the different prescriptions she was placing on me, it was like looking at my first HD movie. Are you telling me I have been missing out on all this detail?
Shortly after all the guessing games of what letter is which the doctor asked me to follow her to another room for another test, she was concerned I had something up in that troublesome left eye. So yet another faintly lit room with another scary looking machine that was most likely going to make my eyes water up lay in front of me. After a few painless yet uncomfortable moments her diagnosis was confirmed, she said my left eye has something called keratoconus. Its nothing to get crazy about but glasses are not going to be able to give me the full amount of detail that I could get with something like surgery or even hard contact lenses.
So, at the end of the day just trying to live a healthier, happier life helps us find all sorts of areas of improvement and awareness. I'm going with my first pair of glasses ever, which are pretty hip if you ask me, so I'll be sure to post a picture later.
I've had the privilege of working for IDEA for just a little bit over four years now and have seen first hand how IDEA "Inspires the World to Fitness" but maybe because of my IT/Design background have yet to be fully "Inspired" myself. That is until 3 weeks ago.
Three weeks ago I had not one but two family members admitted to the hospital for two completely different reasons. The first my Grandmother from my fathers side, she is 82 years old and has been struggling with diabetes for most of her life and it was starting to look like the diabetes was winning. The other my grandfather 81 years old from my mothers side who also has diabetes had a stroke and is also seems to be winning the fight. So here I am off to Texas to visit my grandparents and boy was I in for a surprise.
So not only living in San Diego but also working with IDEA I am surrounded by positive healthy influences, whether I notice them or not. There I am leaving the Airport in El Paso, TX and the first thing I notice is just how LARGE so many people are! Maybe my awareness had been raised due to the fact that both my grandparents were ill but I was just blown away. Right then and there I started to think about my little girl who is just 18 months old and how important it is for me to be an example for her to live a full and healthy life. And not to mention it would be really cool to just walk around without a shirt cause I can.
Long story short, it CLICKED I needed to make a change. Just as this was happening IDEA Health and Fitness is starting a program for us all of us here at IDEA to walk the talk and live healthier and happier lives. I am going to use this blog to document my journey and through my inspiration hopefully help Inspire the World to Fitness.
