See any good movies lately? I loved Soul Surfer...except when she got her arm bit off by the shark. Nasty.
Consider this. What if someone could take a film of all of your thoughts today and then write them down so you could read them in the form of a script? How would that read? What would it be rated? Could you share it with your kids? After reading it, would you and others feel energized or down and depressed?
Thoughts affect action. That is bad news because I am having trouble with my script today. Are you? It is the end of April and it is still in the 40's. We get excited here in Green Bay, Wisconsin when the Packers have a great record. But we are not as excited when we are closing in on another record...the rainiest April ever recorded.
The two scripts below are so "B" movie. Do you recognize this old, tired and boring plot?
1) Thought: " How annoying. It is raining." Action: "I can't workout. Pass the chips." Later..."I wish I would have worked out."
2) Thought:" I really want those two donuts. I'll never lose weight anyway. I am such a loser." Action: Eat two donuts. Later, with regret..."Why did I do that? I wish I wouldn't have."
Sound familiar? Time for a remake! Consider what happens when you catch your negative spiral and even though it is annoying in the moment, change your thinking and make an Academy award winner instead. Lights, camera, action!
1) Thought: "How annoying. It is raining. So what? I don't melt. And I liked playing in the rain as a kid! Action: Here's my raincoat. Off I go!." Later... "Boy do I feel good. I am so glad I did that!"
2) Thought: " I really want those two donuts. Hold on! I am Rocky! I am stronger than a donut. Action: Eat an apple. Later..."I am so proud of myself. I am glad I ate the apple. I feel so much better."
Good news! We are in charge of the scripts we write today. Let's pay close attention to the movie that is playing out in our head. Armed with this awareness, let's choose thoughts and actions that lead to "I'm glad I did" versus "I wish I would have." Win, Rocky, Win!
