As the holidays approach, stress levels soar; it is a key time to harness the power of positive attitudes towards stress and actually use it to our advantage!. After all, it is our attitude towards stress which determines how it affects our health. One can choose to constructively observe that the body's stress response (elevated heart rate, blood pressure, etc) is evolution's way of preparing us for challenge (increased oxygen and nutrients to the brain and muscles). In so doing, one can use stress as an empowering experience, achieving new goals, becoming more resilient, and enjoying the excitement and the social bonds created through the stressful experience. I was recently inspired by this TED talk encouraging us to "create the biology of courage" by going after our goals and trusting we have the strength to handle stress that follows. With the changing of seasons, and as routines amplify with the return to school and work, it is an opportune time to stop and ask oneself, "What am I doing right now, and how does it connect me to my higher goals and vision?". A great exercise to try a couple of times a day, this question can help prevent us from getting caught up in stressful patterns of routine, filter out what is not essential or purposeful to our lives, and bring us closer to the things that are.
Last month I was honored to study with Gary Gray, the "Father of Function", in San Diego, before traveling to Paris, France to learn more about movement techniques such as Feldenkreis, Floor Barre, and Pilates. I look forward to sharing the information with the community and bringing it to life in my October classes.

Earlier this month I was very lucky to experience the work of several leaders in the fitness world at the IDEA Fitness Convention in LA. Highlights included learning from Lenny Parracino of the Gray Institute's Applied Functional Science Program, and pilates masters Marshall Eklund, John Garey, and PJ O'Clair. It is ever inspiring to be amongst dymamic professionals seeking to advance the science and art of human performance.
New classes in Malibu; I am very happy to be teaching mat classes each Saturday at 9:15am at Malibu Fitness, by Zuma Beach. Come join us for a morning class in the spacious studio, breathing the ocean air, and perhaps enjoy the rest of your day playing in the sparkling waves of Zuma Beach across the street.
Pilates and Paddle Events; Come jump on board with us Saturday Sept 7, 8-10am, at the public beach access on Malibu Road. Pilates mat class on the beach at 8am is followed by paddle boarding in the ocean at 9am, led by Tyler Lennon of Cove Paddle Fitness. Last week's event was beautiful; challenging ourselves in new environments always heightens the senses and leaves us feeling revitalized. This is proving to be a great way to challenge the core, build community, and have a lot of fun in the magical Malibu outdoors! Please contact me for details.

Thank you to all who joined in for another great Pilates and Paddle Event last weekend; Tyler and I are really enjoying teaching and seeing you rise to the dual core challenges of pilates on the beach and stand up paddling on the ocean. Due to increasing demand, I will be adding multiple community beach classes to my schedule and welcome all to join in. Starting next week, I will be teaching;
1) Tuesdays, 4pm. The Malibu Beach Inn. On the beach, weather and tide permitting. Indoors overlooking the ocean when high tide/fog prevails.
2) Sundays, 9am. Malibu Beach Road, public beach.
3) Pilates and Paddle; July 13, 8-10am. Malibu Beach Road, public beach.
