It's that time of the year again! All of those "New Years Resolutions!" Time to dust off the cardio equipment and break out the running shoes! I used to be one of those people too. I finally realised that I wasn't making new resolutions but REINVENTING myself into new goals not just for me but for my clients. The key to success with your health is to set realistic goals. If weight loss is your goal be real with yourself to lose 1-3 pounds a week. The longer it takes to lose the weight the longer it will take if you gain a few pounds back. Start with something small like a 30 minute walk with friends or family. Having someone walk with you makes you more accountable.
If your new goal is to "eat clean" then start slow. Clean out your cabinets and get rid of high fructose corn syrup products, foods that are not natural or have more than 5 ingredients on them. These foods are typically laden with preservatives and chemicals. Once your cabinets are cleaned out go to your refrigerator and do the same. The more colorful the produce the better it is for you.
Take time to REINVENT yourself for 2013. I am here to help. ;0)
Try carb cycling! Figure Competitors like myself do it often to stay lean. This is a simple process of planning high-calorie meals on select days and then lower-calorie meals, and cycling the carbohydrates and fat intake. On the first day have high calorie and carb meals throughout the day. Day 2 moderate and day 3 low calorie and carbs.
Another tip is avoid sweets. If you have to have a sweet make sure it's a "10" and have it right after a workout so that your body is still burning calories.
Get rid of your DIET SODA! Artifical sweeteners will cause just as much of a craving and fat storage as regular sugar. So if you think your doing yourself a favor by drinking "diet" soda your mistaken. Instead reach for flavored sparkling water or naturally flavored water.
Eat nuts! Eating a handful of these healthy fats will keep you satisfied longer. Studies have also shown that nuts elevate your metabolism and keeps that fat burning.
In the past I was a vicitm of the Holiday Temptations. I like everyone else got stressed from the Holidays and become an emotional eater. Its easy to do but it is even easier to "undo." Wheather your attending a party or just visiting with family & friends, making good food choices will only put you that much closer to your goals. Here are some tips to plan ahead for Holiday eating.
Before going to a party where you are not sure what they will be serving; eat a meal ahead of time. This way if there is nothing healthy for you to eat your not tempted.
Warn the party host ahead of time that you will be bringing your own food. If it is friends or family hosting the party I am sure they will support your goals.
Drink a 10 ounce Glass of water before you sit down to a meal. This will fill you up so you won't have the desire to stuff yourself full of foods that you will pay for later at the gym.
If you want to celebrate by having an alcoholic drink then choose lower calorie drinks like a 4-6 ounce glass of red wine or a diet tonic with vodka.
If you choose to have your Holiday meal on your "rewards day," don't go overbored. Chose ONE food that is a "10" to you and make sure you sit down and really enjoy it as it truly is a reward for all of you hard work you have accomplished so far in your health journey.
Using tips like these have made the Holidays more managable for me and I know they will do the same for you. BE STRONG! ;0)
