Over commit and you'll quit

Health and fitnessPsychology
By Matt Woodard

How is it that so many people make the same resolutions every year?! With the top 3 resolutions made for 2013 being:

1) lose weight

2) improve fitness level

3) quit smoking (or other bad habits)

Not shocking right? These are the same resolutions made every year. What is happening? I'm going to give you 3 ways to create real change.

1) Don't commit to a schedule!

Now, I'm sure some will read this and not understand. If I have you scheduled for a session and you miss it, well... your still getting charged (because I love you of course). What I mean by this is, if you tell yourself I am going in to the gym Mon - Fri at 6 pm and your boss delegates a ton of work to you (of course they say "this is your chance to shine") you start thinking a healthy lifestyle will just have to wait. Instead start off modestly. I like to call it "under promise and over deliver".

2) Keep your program general.

Be general in your commitment. Allow room for flexibility (no pun intended) this will help adapt and overcome whatever happens during the transition. Make sure that you have multiple options for the day's fitness program ex. walking, biking, hiking, fitness classes, strength training exercises etc.

3) Remember change is subtle.

If you identify with the third most common resolution focus on creating new positive habits. This will help changing your mindset on what's important to you later. Absolutes almost never work. Try creating new habits that substitute bad habits. If you notice you like a cigarette after a meal, start walking for 10 minutes after you eat.

Matt Woodard

I am a trainer in the Seattle Metro area. Previously I worked for the largest privately owned gym in the world, where I was responsible for the development of the Personal Training team for three years. Before that I was in the United States Marine Corps although explosives have nothing to do with fitness training my role in my platoon was to help increase the level of fitness for my fellow Marines. My accomplishments have come through the same philosophy I hold for my clients "Hard work and tenacity will deliver desired results".
