Going Up?

By Natalie Smith
I had a pleasant surprise, not too long ago, when I was looking for the staircase near the elevator. As I am searching for the stairs, with a crowd forming at the elevator, my concern grows for why the stairs never seem to be plainly labeled for an emergency situation. I finally asked, and one of the people waiting for the elevator points me in the right direction. Whew, now I feel better. Guess what happened? One of the people waiting for the elevator followed me to the staircase. Wow, that was great. I did not stick around to see if any more followed us. The two of us had a nice conversation, some good NEAT exercise, and even beat the elevator crowd, without trying. My spirits were lifted as I realized that we all have the capacity to set a good example. So, the next time someone asks if you are going up, or down, (for those of us who are able) why not answer with my favorite response: "Where is the staircase?" Here's to going up in the world.

Walk It Off

By Natalie Smith

"Toughen up and walk it off"...how many times have we heard that one?

There is truth to that, more now, than ever before. Walking is proven, over and over again, to improve prostate, diabetes, obesity and the uncomfortable affects of these conditions, to name a few.

Now that we are entering the warmer, longer, encouraging days of spring, for those of us in the changing seasons areas, try going outdoors to walk it off. I do not mean the extra pounds you may or may not have; rather, the unhealthy conditions that come from being sedentary.

Therefore, all of us should be doing what are bodies allow us to do, in the great outdoors, while taking in all the sights, sounds and smells for that wonderful destressing effect. All it takes is a half hour a day, on most days of the week.

Okay then, will you please be able to go toughen up and walk it off; using common sense, of course? If not walk, then whatever else you are able to do.

Healthy or Easy Menu

By Natalie Smith

Do you want to eat healthy; but, it is too much work that eats up precious time?

Then take the easy way out, which is usually not healthy. Now what do we do?

Both; you can still choose healthy while enjoying convenience. Please, do not skip the produce section of the grocery store. It is very simple to clean and chop fresh fruits and vegetables. Once that is done, you will see how much food there is to serve.

If that is still too time consuming and labor intensive, then choose the platters that are already made up and delicious. The salad bars also have a wonderful variety to choose from. Take out that is healthy and easy, may be pricey; but, someone had to do the work.

So, depending on your priorities and daily surprises, I hope you are able to enjoy a healthy and easy menu.

The Perfect Diet...

By Natalie Smith

...is no diet; it depends on your definition of the word, diet, of course. In this sense, diet means a short term eating plan with short term results to match.

The perfect diet is the one that includes all the food groups in proper amounts to effectively nourish the body with all the essential nutrients. This will be different for each person according to their stage of life, energy requirements and eating styles.

So, spend your time and money wisely, on healthy whole foods. To take it a step further, think about seeing a registered dietitian for your individual needs. The information you gain will be priceless, as this is knowledge you will have for your best health possible.

Yes, you are most certainly allowed to have a treat...just do not make a meal of it. Please remember that this is not deprivation; rather, a part of your healthy lifestyle to suit your taste.

Therefore, the best or perfect diet is a healthy way of eating that can be done for the rest of your life.

New Year's Resolution

By Natalie Smith

Have you made a new year's resolution? To be honest, I do not; because, every single day is the time to do something.

Back in the day when I did try the resolution thing, I would overwhelm myself with many new ideas, only to fall off the wagon. Later, what worked, was when I stuck to one goal and gave it my all.

So, to all of you who are frustrated or trying very hard, maybe you should prioritize; pick one goal to work towards. For those of you who are achieving your goal, keep up the great work.

We all have slips; but, I like to see it as time off or a well deserved treat.

Therefore, no stressing over resolutions just may be the trick.

How to Turn Food into Superfood

By Natalie Smith

Has anyone else heard about spiking food nutrients by using a blender? How is that possible?  Do I want the nutrients in the blender or in my body for optimum performance?

I will continue chewing my food to keep all the nutrients as fuel for my daily activities. Therefore, for anyone else who wants to turn their food into superfood, and do not have a digestion condition to deal with,... chew, chew, chew, and chew some more to pulverize the meal for the most nutritional value.

The blender is fun and used for treats now and then; but, it is easier for me to chew; not to mention, I am working muscles.

Happy Thanksgiving Meal and Treats

By Natalie Smith

Happy thanksgiving to you all. I hope no one stresses over what to eat, when, or how much. This is a day for gratitude, not deprivation or worry. As long as you have your meal balanced, you will be fine. Go ahead and have that treat, or two, just do not make a meal of the processed sweets. No worries, go enjoy your thanksgiving, which is also part of a healthy lifestyle.

Tested by Hurricane Sandy

By Natalie Smith

Haha, just as I mention in the last blog, we need to be in shape for life. Hurricane Sandy may have knocked out our power, but, she did not knock us off our feet. Please remember to do something, anything, to be ready for challenges. I do not get upset when I miss a workout, because, it is most likely due to circumstances out of my control, leading to manual labor which is a workout. So, there you have it: do not stress, just take it one day at a time, or like me, one task at a time. Then, be sure to get a good night's sleep,... when the chance first arises,... sometimes...that is another blog for another day. Take care.
