You may not have heard of clean eating. Or you may have heard of it, but have no idea what it actually is. It is much easier to understand than you may think though.
When you are trying to lose weight or tone up then the most important thing is to ensure that your diet is ‘clean’. Clean eating isn’t just a diet, it’s a lifestyle choice, which is a much better way to live as dieting often leads to cravings, and ultimately a diet will end. Then you are left where you started.
Adopting a clean eating lifestyle is a much better way to live not only for weight loss to accompany your exercise regime, but there are also many other benefits to clean eating. These range from clearer skin (as less toxins will be in your body) through to increased mental wellbeing and energy.
Making the decision to be a clean eater basically means choosing to eliminate all processed foods and extra additives from your diet. So you are choosing to eat whole, unrefined foods. Even if your goal isn’t weight/fat loss this is the healthiest lifestyle choice to make as you will be totally aware of everything that you eat and no hidden additives will sneak into your food.
The easiest way to explain it is to just eat fewer ingredients. When you buy food check that there are no more than 4-6 ingredients in the ingredient list. Also, try to only buy foods where you recognise each item listed in the ingredients. This is the best way to ensure you know what you are putting into your body.
Essentially you should be eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, meats and whole grains.
I have been clean eating for a about six months now and am still not 100% clean, I am only human after all. If you choose to start clean eating then good for you, you will feel the benefits very soon after starting. I noticed that my body felt rejuvenated and (for want of a better word) clean.
Obviously it takes a while to adjust, don’t torment yourself if you eat something un-clean, it’s not the end of the world to eat some cookies or a chocolate bar. Obviously eating treats on a regular basis isn’t recommended. I never punish myself and also never say I shouldn’t eat that because that, for me, is the quickest way to fail at something. We’ve all been there, tried a diet for a few days and resorted to eating a tub of ice cream only to then give up instead of starting over.
Eating something that’s ‘not allowed’ is going to happen sometimes, I actually choose to include things out of the clean eating plan occasionally just so that I won’t crave them and then binge one day. This won’t be approved by the people who are 100% clean, but it works for me. We all deserve treats. On these occasions I will usually make homemade cupcakes or cookies so that I know exactly what is going into them.
So go check it out guys, there are loads of articles with more information on how to adopt the clean lifestyle all over the internet, but I would advise to just start with the basics that I have mentioned above so you don’t get scared by making too many changes at one time. The reason I chose to start eating clean was when I found out I was gluten intolerant, it just seemed to make sense. If you are also intolerant to gluten this plan will fit with your eating habits perfectly as you keep a strict eye on what you consume just like intolerance diets.
If you are interested in this but worried that you will get bored then below is a picture of a dessert that I often eat. It’s gluten free, lactose free and obviously clean (and packed full of protein). It’s Greek yoghurt with strawberries and pecan nuts, and in my opinion, tastes just as good (if not better) than some ice creams! Try it and let me know what you think.
I hope I’ve helped to give you an insight into the world of clean eating, and maybe inspired you to try it. One very important thing to remember is no matter how hard or how often you workout, if your diet isn’t healthy then you won’t see results.
If you ‘eat clean and train dirty’ you will see results. Give it time and you will be amazed.
