So I arrived home from a trip to Boston to see the fireworks while vacationing. Having been a police officer in my former life, I enjoy watching people. Their interactions shows so much. Along with all of this watching people, came a few life lessons.
One thing that made me laugh was a conversation I overheard between a man and his wife as we were checking out an old WWII navel vessel sitting in dry dock. The man, obviously impressed with the weaponry of the ship, was telling his wife about the 20 mm anti-aircraft cannons on the ship and the large five inch guns used to shoot at other ships or onto shore. The wife’s reply was priceless as it showed me how truly different men and women think. She simply stated…”the breeze feels nice,” obviously not as impressed as he was with the ships firepower.
Still, as I thought about our vacation, I was reminded how wonderful it was to have someone to spend time with. Perhaps we share different interests, yet we like to be together. As we sat watching people from an open air bar one evening, I was further reminded of the importance of togetherness. While watching people pass by, an old pickup came rolling down the street making a terrible noise. Upon seeing the tired truck I could not believe it was still running especially making THAT noise. As it passed however, I saw the “JUST MARRIED” sign and the tin cans dragging from the rear of the truck. In the front seat ready to start their new lives together was a young couple. It was a heart warming sight. While it was evident they didn’t have much when it came to finances, they had each other, and that was enough. They were laughing and having the time of their lives!
Later in the week, my wife and I decided to take a walk to see the “tall ships” that had came into the harbor. What we thought would be a fairly short trip actually required about five miles of walking in the heat of the city. My wife, wearing flip flops, was having trouble but she marched on. Perhaps knowing I wanted to see the ships was all she needed to continue on.
Life is simply better when you have someone to share it with. Now there will always be the exception to this rule, but I must say I am greatful to have her with me.
For those fortunate enough to be in a loving relationship however, there are some responsibilities. Now being a fitness blog, you had to expect I would get to staying in shape somewhere. So, here it is. Staying in shape simply allows you to enjoy your own life more, but also allows others to share it with you. Had either one of us been out of shape, we would have probably missed the opportunity to keep walking and see the ships together. How many missed opportunities are out there if wee are physically unable to see them?
Now, I recognize there are no guarantees in life. Anyone of us could suffer an injury of get sick and be unable to do things we want. With that said, I believe we owe it to ourselves and those around us to do what we can to be able to make the most of the time we have together.
So I leave you with a question. Are you doing all you can to ensure you are ABLE to enjoy life to the fullest. Take a good look at yourself. Not only for your own sake, but for those you love.
