Here’s the new see-food diet: see healthy food, then lose weight.

In a new study at the University of Leeds, people who smelled fresh oranges before munching on chocolate ate 60 percent less of the dessert than those who simply sniffed the chocolate prior to eating it. Then, when the participants were given salad or garlic bread as an appetizer (both contained the same amount of calories), people who grabbed the greens ate less of a subsequent pizza meal.

Food associated with dieting—like salad and oranges—can instantly remind you of weight-loss goals and can help control your food intake, says study coauthor Nicola Buckland.

Make it work for you by surrounding yourself with more good-for-you stuff, like a bowl of fruit on your counter, sliced vegetables in the fridge, and whole grain crackers sitting front-and-center in the pantry. At work? Bring a bag of carrots to put on your desk—perfect ammo when your boss brings in a box of donuts.
