My son has been reminding me that in the movie "2012", the world comes to an end. From the eyes of a child, everything appears shortsighted, perhaps bleak, and not a little dramatic.
We know that the world will not come to an end. But what about your own personal world? Im refering to your body, your health? How do you feel today? As good as you'd like?
We also know that it takes several weeks to establish new behaviors. Slower is better and most important, expectations need to remain realistic. One could even say LOW!! That's because more people STOP their journeys toward better health because they've set themselves up to fail. How? By holding the bar too high, believing that they are 20 or 30 years younger than they actually are, and forgetting that they have real life responsibilities and stressors.
Getting healthy is a day by day process. Any success story that you read brings home the fact that EVERYONE suffers setbacks. No one is immune to this simple fact. Is it because you're weak, undisciplined, lacking will power?
A thousand NO's. It's because you are human, because you have a family, a job, a home....
What to do? Get back to it. A little bit every day. Consistency is the key. Keep your eyes on the road ahead. Get the Big Picture. Your life, the Big Picture.
Happy New Year
Altough it's going to be another hot one today...over 90...there is definitley a change in the air during early morning workouts. A layer for warmth is required; our workout mats get wet from the time they are unfurled (a little drama there,LOL) and the time we sit down to stretch and hit the core region. During the day, the angle of the sun is a bit lower...I love it!
Cooler days mean easier and more enjoyable workouts, there is no doubt about it! The heat takes a tremendous toll on us as we exercise. During this time of year, as we exercise, our raised core temperature is beautifully offset by cooler air. It is somehow refreshing. We want to get moving to warm up; we want to stay moving to keep warm.
This also seems to be a time of goal setting....all the looming holidays and all...Consider joining an exercise class now...there is no better time than the present and...hate to say it....we really are NOT getting younger....the new season begins tomarrow!
How about starting a new season in your own life? One where health and fitness takes the priority that you know is needed for optimum health. Be good to yourself...people are counting on you.
Be well.

Living in a small town, there are certain traditions that bring people together. In La Verne, there is a football game each year where our beloved Bonita High School Bearcats play cross town rivals, the San Dimas Saints, for the coveted Smudgepot. Last night was such a night with the Bearcats beating the Saints 40-20. Once again, Bonita takes the prize.
Now I'm not a huge football fan; I struggle with the basics of the game, but the energy at this event is palpable! All over, you see alumni, such as myself ('79!!). Many of us have kids now at Bonita, playing sports, cheering with the squads, hanging out with their friends, and creating memories that we all know will hugely impact their lives.
What are your memories from that time in your life? They say you can't go home again, but I'm not sure I agree with that....it's just that home looks and feels different as an adult than it does as a high school student growing up in a smalll town.....like our small town...and that's OK. Maybe they....the kids here....will return in a generation to see their own kids take the prize.
Have a great Labor Day weekend

Are you over 40? Are you fabulous? I turn 50 this year and have long been a fan of this excellant website created by two women determined to eliminate frumpy dressing for women over forty. I highly recommend it!It's fun and makes a whole lot of sense on a number of levels.
On a fitness note, however, the link below is an audio podcast of the two gals having a chat with Lisa Crisalle, a Fitness Instructor, about the challenges of getting and keeping a healthy lifestyle and body for those of us over 40. Check it out:

Today I registered my kids for their new respective schools; one going to Middle, the other to High School; the only Middle and High Schools in town, and, coincidentally, the High School that I happily graduated from a mere 32 years ago. I live in a small town in Southern California, and I'm here to tell you: you CAN go home again.
Making a home for yourself and your loved ones is probably one of the most important functions of our lives. Here, in our small town, where the clerk at the grocery store knows that you take paper, packed heavy; and where your kid's teacher is an AYSO coach, and where your mechanic is your high school cross country teammate; and where his mom lives across the street from you.....well, you get the message.
Speaking of new beginnings....I am starting my classes up again August 22. There is no mystery to the date being the first day of school here in our town. Please look to my site for all the details. I would love to hear from you...I would love to see you.

On days where it becomes difficult to muster the motivation to get moving, I can't think of a better location for a workout than the beach. Why? It's the climate, among other things. In the middle of August, it's still cloudy and overcast at 11 am and quite comfortable for a nice slow run.
Those who know me are aware that my running speed is nothing for the record books. I am a proponent of long slow, slow, slow runs.....some would call it a shuffle. It's maybe not the best idea when you need a cardio boost, but that's what those stadium steps are for and they are nowhere to be found here on the beach.
Another reason the beach is SO ideal for a workout is because everywhere you go, there are others doing the same thing: bike riding, roller blading , jogging, walking, kayaking, paddle boarding....and looking as if they are having the time of their lives.
OK, so those of us in the 91750 don't live an easy distance to the beach, but for the occasional Saturday or Sunday, or during those summer vacations....a day at the coast is a great option.
Hope you're having a great day!
