can I get any HOTTER?

HOTTER in my HOT YOGA class I mean...haha   when I'm in my hot yoga class and the room is 108 degrees and climbing, I sit on my mat, massage my "fascia"  (sounds so personal/lol)  that run along the bottoms of my feet to wake them up too.  You see, your feet work very hard in class which was new to me since I work in sneakers and train, run, walk in sneakers and never gave "barefoot exercises" a thought other than being barefoot and getting a pedicure :-)))  ......oh anyway, my feet were sore after my first 2 classes from gripping and trying to stabilize my ankles which were trying to stabilize my legs which were trying to stabilize my hips that are working hard to balance ME in a pose.
WHEW a lot going on there from the bottom up.   So while all this is taking place from the waist down, I'm beginning to sweat from every pore in my body.

Then the HUMIDITY pipe comes on  (actually on and off during all the standing poses in class)....yes it's a huge round pipe that produces & pushes this wonderful hot wet cleansing steam into the room .  AAAHHHHHHHHH  can you say FACIAL while you workout.

When everyone in the room is CHANNELED into themselves, FOCUSED ON themselves, the room is silent with just some low zen like music in the background is WHEN I FIRST FELT the ENERGY from each of us around me.   WOW, what a peaceful yet energizing experience this is.

As you've read in my last blog, I've had some "milestones" and now those milestones have become familiar to me and my body now knows how to  go in and out of these poses while I work on the depth of the pose "for me."   Some days are good and some days I can't hold the pose and fall out of it more than I can stay and hold "that" pose.

I have learned to really really focus and not be THE TEACHER and watch what everyone else does to make sure they do it right...not my job in this class.  My job is to WATCH me in the mirror and correct ME to get the most out of this class.

One of the most meaningful sentences Dawn says at the end, (now I"m paraphrasing here) goes something like this...

"Every class is a NEW BEGINNING and you all have just stretched and sweat through your muscles to your skin for 90 minutes, so what you decide to PUT BACK INTO YOUR BODY is YOUR CHOICE."

the essence of this statement SPEAKS TO ME and I take that statement VERY SERIOUSLY and have become MORE MINDFUL about my body.

yes I'm a Personal Trainer and have been one foooooor'ever,  but I too need someone to SPEAK TO ME and this is the first time in my career that I as a "student" am LISTENING & HEARING what Dawn is saying and I THANK HER for this.

you're NEVER TOO OLD

can I tell you all I had a few "MILESTONES" today.

2012 = 30 years ago I had a spinal fusion with bone graphed off my hip. Lost lots of mobility in the low back not to mention having two 5 inch incisions up the sides of my spine equals mooooocho scar tissue that has been a "brick wall" for me over the years as far as flexibility, elasticity and range of motion.

Today was the lucky number 13 for me - 13 hot yoga classes in 6 weeks. 13 classes and today I was able to actually grab my feet behind me while laying on my tummy and I actually did a very SAFE, COMFORTABLE BOW pose. Prior to today, I laid on my tummy, knees bent, feet up in the air and my arms at my side with my hands on the back of my legs....so very far away from my feet. My second milestone is being able to BEND my neck with my chin touching my chest in another pose. This Saturday, Feb 18 marks my 16th week out from my neck surgery on my spine too. (sheesh...thank God the MIDDLE of my spine is good, lol)

WHY am I telling you all this...AS A TRAINER I teach PATIENCE to my clients everyday. PATIENCE with nutrition, PATIENCE with resistance movement, PATIENCE with weight loss. PATIENCE has many meanings for all of us and WE ALL KNOW WHERE WE NEED TO APPLY PATIENCE. Being PATIENT in Hot Yoga has lengthened my spine & muscles and has helped me REGAIN movement in my low back and for this I am OVER THE MOON.

I am also SHARING this because as a 56 year old women with "physical liabilities" (even though they were surgically fixed, I am/was so limited to what I could do) we are never too old to try something new and as long as we LISTEN TO OUR BODIES, practice PATIENCE and be PERSISTENT, YOU too can regain your younger body deep inside. I am AMAZED at what Hot Yoga and Crystal Dawn Hyde Lowe, my instructor
has done for me and I thank her from the bottom of my heart. I'm stronger than ever in the gym as well. It's all coming together with PATIENCE.

PATIENCE ...my fav word.

SUMMER FUN

well this has been a great summer for FIT GIRL Back Yard BOOT CAMP Parties.  the ladies hosting the boot camps have done a great job providing a PARTY for their girlfriends who all bring a covered dish of HEALTHY food.   OOOOOOOh and I will say that the wine punches were totally yummy.  I might just host one myself in the fall for MY girlfriends.

Another venture for me is FitIN, Females in training INformation which has more info on my website.  www.riekerfit.com  I've had many ladies contact me to make either a GROUP appointment or a PRIVATE appointment.

I'm trying to get back into my running  but on most days my cervical spine is not happy with me....hahaha   oh well, I keep trying.  BUT I still do my zumba which I totally love.   cha cha cha!

Weight training is MY FIRST LOVE and is an activity I will do till the day I die.  Love the way it makes me feel.

be back later ...xoxo Suanne

Suanne Rieker

It became clear to me that Health and Fitness would be my destiny. Not just to “get fit” but to “TEACH FIT.” My name is Suanne Rieker. After giving birth in 1975 I could hardly walk. Spinal Spondylolisthesis was my diagnosis. In 1980, after many failed attempts at exercise, I was able to establish my own fitness program by lifting weights. By stabilizing my spine, I could train each muscle group safely. Unfortunately, my vertebrae would still slip forward during any attempt at cardio, putting me flat on my back. Being a widow with a small daughter I could not afford to be laid up. In 1982 I had to have spinal fusion surgery and after eight weeks flat and three months in a brace I began a walking program. I read books on training and nutrition, lost 60 pounds and with my new “stable spine,” got certified to teach aerobics. I have been running since the age of 38…because I can. I have been a Personal Trainer for more than 25 years. I’m a former YMCA Physical Director and since 1998, I've been the owner of a personal training business. I LOVE WHAT I DO! After training high school athletes and adults, I now focus all my energy into training women. FITNESS CHANGED MY LIFE! I found a career and met my husband in a gym. I teach and preach to whomever will listen so they, too, can enjoy living a healthy lifestyle.
