Staying hydrated and feeling great — with water — the essential element

Did you know that our bodies are about 60 percent water? And, almost every function that takes place within our bodies depends on water. Plus, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to our cells, and provides a moist environment for our ears, noses, and throats.

In order for our bodies to function properly, and keep us feeling great, we must replenish ourselves frequently by drinking water and other fluids containing water. The amount of water we require everyday to stay healthy varies from one person to another.

Although in a recent advertising campaign, Dos Equis character “the most interesting man in the world” tells us to ‘stay thirsty my friends,’ nutritionists say that by the time thirst strikes, we may already be slightly dehydrated. So, medical experts recommend the average healthy adult drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

Easily avoid dehydration, which leads to many complications ranging from uncomfortable to dangerous, by following these tips:

  • Drink a glass of water with each meal, before and between meals
  • Hydrate before, during, and after exercise
  • Substitute sparkling water for alcoholic drinks
  • Be sure to drink more fluid than usual when outdoors in hot weather
  • Keep in mind that drinks such as coffee and soda actually lead to dehydration, so drink more water when consuming these beverages

Of course, my favorite subject, and yours — working out — influences our water requirements too. While working out, we need to drink extra water to make up for the fluid lost through perspiration.

So, drink plenty of water everyday and increase the amount of water when exercising or spending time in the heat. It’s just another simple way to feel great.
