The first food pyramid was introduced in the 1970's, and it is supported by the USDA. The food pyramid calls for a diet high in carbohydrates, such as grains, cereals, rice, etc., and a diet low in fats. With that said, why are obesity rates and diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's on the rise? Society is constantly told to exercise and follow proper nutrition guidelines.

Permanent weight loss can be achieved and maintained over your lifetime, but there is a better way than extreme dieting! Here is what low calorie diets can do:1.  Cause your metabolism to slow down2.  Cause weight loss plateaus3.  Cause you to regain any weight you've already lost4.  Damage vital organs and impair overall health.5.  Cause your muslce tissue to basically eat itself for fuelIn essence, you may have a low body weight, but still have a high percentage of body fat.

Fat loss progress is usually underestimated or not appreciated in my experience. I have trained clients who averaged 0.5-1 % lb. of fat/loss each week and they still felt like it was not enough. I think it’s safe to say that we are not patient and want it now! As I tell my clients, you did not gain that weight overnight and you won't lose it in one night either.

Small changes eventually lead to a healthy lifestyle
Even though I have exercised pretty much all my life, I haven't always eaten right. When I was younger, nutrition was something of a mystery to me. All I knew was what I had heard…fat was the devil! So, I avoided fat at all costs. I loaded up on pretzels and every packaged fat free product advertised in the grocery store. It didn’t matter what I ate as long as it didn’t have fat. But what I didn’t know was that I was actually loading up on carbs, calories and sugar that eventually turned to fat.  What?

Here's why you should get ballin': A stability ball works your abs way more than regular crunches do. Plus, use it in place of a bench for strength moves and your core gets a workout — you'll engage your deep obliques and lower-back muscles to stay in place.

During the holiday season when you’re getting pulled in a million different directions, it’s hard to keep your health and fitness a priority. With work, holiday parties, family gatherings and gift buying, having any moment to yourself or time to exercise can be difficult. However, exercise is perfect for reducing holiday stress and for keeping off those unwanted pounds. Anytime you do exercise, it needs to be efficient, intense and fun. This allows you to bake Christmas cookies and eat them, too.  Guilt free cookies, who would have thought?
