If you were hunting or gathering in the forest a couple of thousand years ago you would need to adopt a practice of taking great care of the plants that were poisenous, and the animals that considered you as a potential meal. While a bear or a lion is unlikely to jump on you from behind the bakery counter there are plenty of traps and poisens. The same self protective way of being is helpful when you food shop today.
I hope everyone had a safe, fun, relaxing, fulfilling holiday season!
While I firmly believe that short-lived New Years resolutions are not good for us-I like to tell people to form "habits, not resolutions"- I do respect that MANY people take the first step by making a resolution. After all, most journeys are one day, one step at a time. And making the decision to change is definitely the first step!
So I applaud ALL of you who have made health/fitness/wellness related resolutions!! Good for you!!

While I'm not sure that I will be able to give you anything as good as last year's holiday/end of year 'zombie twinkie' blog ( http://blog.ideafit.com/blogs/ariadne-greenberg/the-requisite-holiday-survival-guide-because-of-course-we-will-be-running-from-hordes-of-zombie-twinkies ) I found a couple of handout s(while I was doing some end of year cleaning)
Did you know there are about 95 calories in an apple but 120 in a small glass of apple juice? An orange has about 60 calories while a glass of orange juice is nearly double that at 112. Plus, if you eat the fruit, you are getting lots of fiber and vitamins and avoiding preservatives and extra processing chemicals. The fiber in fruit not only gives you more bang for your calorie buck, but also balances the natural sugar and keep it from going straight to your bloodstream and shooting your insulin up.
Most people know that the immune system defends the body against infections, viruses, cancer cells, fungi and other parasites. What is less realized is that an unhealthy immune system speeds up the ageing process and is a major factor in fatigue. A well-functioning immune system is vitally important for overall health. As we emerge from summer to winter, the seasonal change can often bring an increased vulnerability to infections and illness. There is a lot you can do to improve the “terrain” and strengthen resistance.
With holiday season upon us, it is easy to get down on our body image. Many people gain an average of ten pounds during the holidays. With all of the delicious foods and beverages, it is easy to see why. I recently had my 41st birthday in November and many of my gifts were treats that I don’t eat regularly. Usually I will eat some and give the rest away. Sometimes I will eat it all. The difference now is that I am kind to myself regardless of what choice I make. I am a lot healthier for it.
