Too many people focus on weight when they should be focusing on total wellness. I will not tell you that someone who has a body fat percentage 10% or more higher then it should be is ok. I will tell you that the scale is a problem. Those who focus on the scale grow dependent on having to see the number to go down to feel successful. Reality is when you do this all you are doing is developing very bad mental habits that can and will lead to obsession and disorders. Yes, believe it or not over exercising is a sickness.
This morning, I discovered a whole new reason for exercising intensely at the beginning of your day!Have you ever seen Cesar Milan's show Dog Whisperer? He shows people how to help their dogs follow directions & be well-behaved. One of the techniques he uses for the unruly pups is to exercise the daylights out of them in order to remove all their excess energy and thus enable them to listen to obey the commands of their masters. What an ingenious idea... it really works - on people too!
A momentary drop in the temperature this week, reminded me that it’s time for my annual “Fall Prevention” post. This year, my message is more personal because the subject hit close to home. My mother, who is 85, fell in the middle of the night a few months ago. She conveniently tumbled to the ground during one of my periodic cross country visits. She is a an active, healthy, senior, who can even play a bit of tennis when she wants to. She still fell. It was an accident, and sometimes stuff just happens.
Every so often . . . not too often . . . I give my wellness workshop at Glen Ivy Hot Springs and it resonates with someone. They come up after class and ask me if I have a "program" or a "dvd" or something they can buy to take home. Someone asked me that today. I smiled and then told them . . . and I will tell you too:
When she opened the door she was still in her pajamas. The sweet old-fashioned kind with tiny blue flowers and a collar with piping that matched. They hung on her like the clothes hanging on hangers in my closet.
Being healthy is more than just working out and eating right! It's making intentional choices, on a DAILY basis, to do things that are good for you. Physically, you definitely want to exercise, eat healthy and wholesome foods, drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep. But, remember, you are more than just a body - you are also spirit, which includes your intellect, your emotions, your very soul! So be intentional about taking good care of these, too. Pray, read, foster healthy relationships, smile, be thankful, help others.
