Do you ever think about your future self, the senior you? How you might look, where you’ll live, what you’ll do with your days? More importantly, how will you be feeling? Do you imagine yourself being healthy? I suspect that you probably don’t envision your future-self popping a plethora of pills each day or picture yourself maneuvering hallways pushing a walker or traversing the neighborhood in a wheelchair, right?
What are you doing today for your future wellness? It’s an important detail to reflect on. No one aspires to be unhealthy. Yet so many people are presently experiencing or are creating preventable diseases, ailments, illnesses. Everything we do (or don’t do) for our wellness today will impact our tomorrow. Each day that passes without taking action concerning well-being negatively influences future wellness. Every time we procrastinate exercising or eating healthier has a detrimental effect on present and future wellbeing. It’s about choices. Taking charge of wellness is a choice.
What do you choose? Having a healthier eating style, losing the weight, becoming more active, feeling better, sleeping better, overcoming type 2 diabetes, managing stress better, and being here to see grandkids are what I hear most often from clients. They’ve often been riding the diet roller coaster over and again and have resolved to finally use that gym membership or actually walk on that treadmill in the basement. Inevitably something happens to impede their progress. Whether it’s procrastination, being ‘too busy’, or having had too many unsuccessful attempts – something causes them to give up. Their determination and resolve diminishes and they revert back to the unhealthy ways, feeling defeated and resigned to “this is the way it is” mentality. Then they’re back where they started.
Self-discovery is an important element. One of the main reasons that I enjoy being a holistic health coach and wellness educator is helping people make the connection with why they haven’t been successful in reaching their past wellness goals. Using some self-discovery tools clients uncover their roadblocks. That’s the moment when they really begin to understand how to take charge of their wellness and begin to experience wellness successes.
Don’t disappoint your future self! You won’t want to look back someday with regret at the realization that you should have – that you could have - taken charge of your wellness sooner.
Today is the day to take responsibility for your wellness! It is possible to lose the weight, eat healthier, feel healthier, sleep better, and to feel good in the skin you’re in!
