Back to Basics

It is very important to your physical, mental and spiritual health to maintain a healthy level
of fitness.

With the strained economy not everyone can afford a gym membership. For those on a tight budget there are other options. You can exercise anywhere. Home, a park, at work, anywhere! Get back to the basic exercises. Jumping Jacks, jogging in place, jumping rope, squats, lunges, push-ups and sit-ups can all be done almost anywhere.

Mission Possible 1:

My challenge to you is to get back to basics. Remember the push-ups and sit-ups we used to do in grade school and high school? Well, let's get back to the old way of doing things. This month work toward improving the number of push-ups and sit-ups you can do in one set. All it takes is the decision to do as much as you can at least 4 times a week. Track your progress and on the last day of May celebrate your improvements no matter how big or small. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

Wendi Hodgen

I have always been a fascinated by the human body and how it is affected by fitness and wellness. While attending San Jose State University, I was in top physical condition when a truck rear-ended and totaled my car. I suffered injuries that affected my back and neck, to the point of shifting my spine sideways. After 12 months of rehabilitation I was able to recover to the point of resuming most of my fitness and dance activities. The ER doctor told me that if I had not been in such good physical shape, my injuries would have been far more serious. A light bulb went on. At that point I realized that exercise has far more benefits than making us feel and look good. Being fit can save your life. Since then, I have continued to exercise and stay active, helping friends and family learn how to lift weights, workout and eat healthy. Although I have a Master’s degree in Theatre Arts I decided to pursue education in Kinesiology and Nutrition. I have worked as a personal trainer with 24 Hour Fitness, earned my Fitness Specialist certification through Mission College and subsequently earned my Personal Trainer Certification through ACE (American Council on Exercise). I have been an active member in the Wellness Committee at Gardner Family Health Network, Inc. for more than two years, take classes at the awesome Academy of Self Defense, and earned a green belt and medals in Shotokan Karate. I started conducting weekend boot camps a few years ago at the request of friends and co-workers which was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I also started “Phoenix Rising”, a non-profit program that brings dance and fitness to women’s shelters improving mood, health and hope. I am on a mission to educate and inspire others to live healthier, happier lives. “My passion is helping people who think they have run out of options. I love helping people with asthma and other health or financial problems discover creative ways to stay fit and healthy.”
