50.2 miles to my Ultra Marathon - April 2012 update

By Heike Yates

At this point, I don't have a video for you but just a little update on how things are going.

On March 17th, I ran the Rock n' Roll Marathon in DC and it truly was my worst marathon ever.

Why you ask? WHY, I say myself.

Training with my 26.2 to Boston group went well, no injuries, no problems it was smooth sailing.

Race day the weather was going to be in the 70's (training was in the 20-30s) in addition, the pollen where dense because every tree, flower or grass was blooming. Remember I just came back from skiing in the fresh and clean mountains of Banff/Canada.

Here is what happened: Everything perfect until !!! Mile 16 dizzy, mile 18 ready to throw up, mile 20 walking and shuffling, STILL DETERMINED, mile 22 hands are swelling up (never a good sign), kept drinking water, gatorade etc to keep somewhat hydrated, mile 25 ALMOST HOME and finished in 4:36:58 but finished nevertheless!

WHY did I finish and not give up? Because there was never a serious danger to my health from my point of view and there where not injuries. Pure determination to never give up that was what drove me.

Some have asked me, if running a marathon is 50/50 performance and determination. This time it was 80% determination, the training was in the bag but then the Washington spring just got to me.

Here is a picture of me on mile 12 or so - things where still good then .......but then they still are,

as one of my friends pointed out.Rock n' Roll Marathon 2012

Next A-race (for those who don't know what that means = the main race, the one that is the next important one) is the 50k = 31.068 miles in Virginia on June 3rd.
