January 29, 2014 Thanks to everyone who donated their time, energy, talents and money we were able to raise enough funds to pay for our 501(c)(3) application! As you know, the purpose of this event was to raise funds for the Athena Fitness, Alpha Force volunteer program nonprofit application. The willingness to help displaced women and children in our community gain access to fitness and wellness services makes all the difference for our organization and community.

I love lifting weights it is such an empowering thing for a women to come up to a barbell and know she can lift over 100lbs off the floor. Wonder women here i come! Honestly when i started my weightloss journey i didn't lift weights at all. I started with cardio like treadmills, bikes and any machine i could find. Great for endurance but doesn't do much for strength. I know a lot of women don't think we need a lot of strength or think that will make you look bulky or grow muscles in places you didn't even know you had them. Trust me ladies strong is the new skinny.

They're listening.  The little ones who whine that they want a snack, need help going potty, want you to pick them up...put them down....The little ones whos tears can break your heart and smiles lift you to the moon.  They're listening...to every word you say.

I learned a new phrase the other day. And no, my daughter did not learn it at school. (Thank God I'm not THERE yet!). It's was "mom shaming". Have you heard about this? It's the act upon which other mothers or women put down another mom or woman because the don't agree with her actions, behavior, choices, decisions or appearance. I heard about it when a fellow blog writer and personal trainer posted a picture of herself and her three young children.

I love it when my clients try something new.  When they set a goal and go for it!  Their excitement and enthusiasm is equal to that of a drug.  It makes me want to set a loftier goal and go after it.  Often, like a honeymoon, that enthusiasm wanes.  The long hours of training.  The time and monetary investment.  The early mornings or denied nights out so you can achieve your goal.  They can take their tole.  Its hard to do without or deny pleasures for a goal that seems so far off.

I was always one of those people to accept a challenge. When someone told me I couldn't do something, I was determined to prove them wrong! Looking back on my life, all of my most exciting adventures and learning experiences were because I was first challenged by someone else or myself. 6 months in Spain followed by backpacking through Europe. Moving to NJ by myself for a new job. Playing rugby in college. Qualifying to run the Boston Marathon. And most recently, an open water swim triathlon.

My younger sister recently asked me for some help losing weight.  She had joined a local gym and was exercising almost every day.  She had lost a little weight initially but was not getting the results she wanted.  When I asked her about her gym routine she said she was spending 30-45 minutes on the elliptical trainer, followed by some core and arm exercises.  Sound familiar?
