Hello, my name is Dawna and I am 35 years old. I have 4 children; 3 boys, Jared (19), Justin(16), Jackson(3) and 1 daughter, Isabella (4). I am a wife to a wonderful Coast Guardsmen. We live on an Island (in which Im from) in Sitka, Alaska. I went to Pinnacle Career Institute to earn my Associates degree after having my fourth child and needing to lose a few pounds. I joined the local gym and fell in love with fitness. I decided that making such life changes felt so good that I wanted to help others do the same. I am now running my own small business (Personal Training by Dawna) and well on my way to helping those that are in the spot I once was.     My journey with my weight lost began in march 2011, when I decided that I wanted to feel my age, and live while I was alive. Lucky for me my dear friend ( Dawna Hermes) had pointed her life and career towards health and fitness. It was very key that I had reached a point that I was ready to commit and make changes I could be proud of. Dawna recognized my will to commit wanted to be a (huge) part of my journey and success, simply for the benefit of my health. To me is was no longer about trying to be "skinny" or being able to where cute clothes. While fashion can be a fun motivator, for me living a long life was where I was aiming.

    At the beginning of the process, I sat down with Dawna to establish my goals for my body and strength. I was battling with aches and pains for many years, caused mostly by stress and my line of work as a hair stylist. I wanted to increase my strength, especially in my back, shoulders, and arms and also increase my stamina and strengthen my heart. I am a singer as well as a stylist and breath control is a major part of singing and preforming. To me having a strong heart is of primary importance given that heart disease is the number on killer of women. I was adamant about not bulking up, getting too skinny or loosing my curves. As my health adviser, trainer and friend Dawna listen very carefully to my needs. She started with an assessment of weight, BMI, and figure measurements and discussed with me what my realistic potential was in achieving my goals.

    The next step was to hit the gym! With the information I had given her, Dawna went on to customize a program for me that incorporated a full body strength training and cardio elements. Before deciding on the intensity of the program she tested my strength, flexibility and balance. Much to my surprise I was stronger than I even knew. She would keep me pumped with her genuine excitement for our findings. Once my starting level was established we began the program together. Key word is together, she was always right there beside me pushing herself and sweating it out as I did the same. To watch a woman conquer her body with sheer will power was beyond inspirational. She kept me pushing through my mental and physical boundaries that I had created. Each time I achieved a simple task that she asked of me my confidence and mental strength amplified. Our program was 5-7 days of full body strength training including : weight lifting, core exercises, cardio exercises. As well as 3-5 days a week on a treadmill doing interval training to increase cardio stamina and accelerate fat burn.

    Through the journey naturally there where trials and tribulations to overcome. There were good days, great days and bad days. Along the way I kept a log book of my program and my stamina, as well as a food journal. My diet was a big part of my successful results. Oddly enough my diet was not strict or depriving, but balanced and nutritious. The biggest thing I changed was to eat breakfast regardless and eat more through out the day. I was expending any where from 300-800 calories in about an hour and a half at the gym not to mention the calories burned through out the day. Food is key and is imperative for fueling the body for positive changes. I found that journal was validation, and motivation. As as woman it is natural to have moments of complete dread when it comes to exercises, this is where having each other was like having gold. We would talk through emotional blockages and decompress lifes stresses on days and on other days roll with our energy levels and crank up the ear buds.

    I successfully achieved all the goals we set for me and astonished my self with the increase of my cardio stamina. I could go on and on about the amazing experience I had on my journey to rediscovering myself and my body with my best girl Dawna. I am proud of the hard work I have put in and the positive changes I have made to myself, and I am proud to say that I didn't do it alone. The reality for me was that trying to achieve what I did on my own would have been daunting to say the least. I needed the guidance, inspiration and motivation that a personal trainer could offer. I was a very lucky girl to have a great one like Dawna in my life!
