"Excuses are nails used to build the house of failure"-Don Wilder and Bill Rechin Something really hit home today and I really feel the need to share it. It seems like we as a society we are continuously looking for motivation in order accomplish a task or attempt someting new. Today I realized that getting motivated is turning more and more into an excuse not to do something. If we aren't motivated enough to do something we come up with anything to distract us form "getting motivated" in order to accomplish a task. For those of us in the health and fitness industry, we see this all the time especially around the New Year. We need some sort of motivation to get off of the couch, walk to our car and go drive a couple of minutes to the gym, where we will spend the next couple of hours lifting heavy things, run on machines, or take some verbal abuse from a trainer yelling at you to do "2 More!". Before any of this has to happen we tell ourselves that we need to get motivated before we go along with our fitness endeavors. If we don't find the motivation we come up with some sort of excuse that stops us form giving our bodies what it needs the most, movement! Our bodies are made to move but in todays technological society we have every excuse in the world not to move. Have you ever heard of the term if you don't use it you lose it? Well it turns out that this statement is actually very true. The less we engage our bodies in movement the quicker it will deteriorate. There are hundreds of studies about the benefits of movement for a healthy body and slowing down the process of aging. There are millions of useful tools full of information to help you accomplish a personal goal in health and fitness. There are apps, text books, magazines, ebooks, infomercials, etc. devoted to keeping you motivated and providing you with useful information on movement. With all of these tools and studies on the benefits of exercise why is it that we still cannot get motivated to get up and workout? Getting motivated has turned into an excuse to stop you from doing something. If we don't have our headphones we cannot workout. If we don't have the right music we cannot workout. If we aren't wearing the right shoes, or if an instructor we don't like is teaching, if it's too cloudy outside we wont workout. The list goes on and on and it's getting absurd. We feel that we need the right music to pump us up. When we don't have headphones to listen to music and shut everyone out we wont workout. If you aren't wearing the proper shoes for the treadmill or bike we cannot workout. Here's the thing, we have let the things that motivate us control us. unless the conditions are right we wont have a good workout or we wont workout at all. We know know all of the facts, we have all of the tools but we are still lacking in motivation. Getting motivated has been replaced with dumb distractions and excuses to get motivated. I'm not proposing a new way to get motivated to go and workout. All of the tools and information are already out there to help you with that. I'm suggesting that you just go and do it! Forget about trying to motivate yourself and get moving. If an object in motion will stay in motion then you will find when you begin moving you wont stop until you are done. Even if you are fighting to get through your workout you wont leave feeling worse than when you started. Don't let getting motivated distract you from the mission of your health and wellness!
