Forget Media Hype!
In the last few decades the media has barraged us with the image of thin, thin, thin women! Most of us believe this is what we must look like to be acceptable, and in some instances - - lovable. Even skinny super models are airbrushed to appear “thinner.” Because of this us we strive for a completely unrealistic standard. We have been brainwashed into thinking that unless we’re a tiny size we are not good enough. We can drive ourselves crazy in the pursuit of perfection - - Some spend a fortune on weight loss products, exercise contraptions, crazy fad starvation diets, anything that promises a quick transformation.
Women (and men) who can afford it get plastic surgery and have procedures like lipo. Of course those procedures are sometimes legitimately warranted and effective and in some cases it’s necessary for reconstruction. (What I’m talking about are the gratuitous cases, the ones looking for a quick fix.)
Eating disorders are more rampant than ever, in younger and younger girls. I’ve had a few clients under the age of 16 who have battled bulimia/binging or anorexia. The pressure to measure up to what society and the media expect these young girls to look like is overwhelming.
We beat ourselves up day in and day out and hold ourselves hostage to this standard of complete and utter perfection.
We have to begin to ACCEPT ourselves, the size we are today, our beautiful and unique bodies. WE are more than a size or a number on the scale!
