Trends, Old School, Cross Training and than some...
I've been in the business for some time now, started early on, when I was in high school while playing soccer and loved what the gym workouts brought to my game. I was very fortunate to have been taken under the professional guidance of a wonderful trainer and friend who was more than just a gym owner and body builder. His amazing wisdom in the field of conditioning like all Old School trainers of his time gave me the foundation that has kept me interested and inspired, and wanting to push the boundaries of not just hitting the weights and running miles at a time. Back than the CATCH PHRASE WAS CROSS TRAINING... lol... TODAY'S TRENDS ARE NOTHING NEW REALLY!!! It's just another spin on old school wisdom.
In most sports there's a combination of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning that is needed to help an athlete to perform their very best, and to help increase skill levels in all areas with a specific expertise in that sport. If a coach is more than just a sports coach but has the ability to motivate, inspired and really knows his/hers specialty like the back of their hands, and always continue to push the boundaries to keep clients and athletes on top of their game not only on the court or field, gym or studio, but mind, body & soul, they will be totally CUTTING EDGE IN ALL LEVELS OF TRAINING.
My personal opinion is that YOU, are an individual, it takes both types of training to meet, and surpass your goals, doesn't matter if you're an athlete or not. But what matters is that you cultivate a program that enhances your ability to perform your very best, taking every aspect of training into consideration for your needs. Both types of training has it's benefits, like they should, but how you tweak, periodize, plan will make a difference on how you get the ultimate maximum benefits to meet your potential. HERE IS WHERE A GOOD COACH & TRAINER COMES INTO PLAY. Especially if they continue to keep themselves up to date on the latest conditioning strategies but never forget the foundational basics.
