My morning started with a great dance workout with Tahneetra Crosby and her Soul Train House Party session at IDEA World Convention. Tahneetra brought us way back to the Jordache, Snake, classic soul train line and old school party music. My next session was “Going Solo-How to Open Your Own Business”. The dynamic ladies of Oakland, CA, Shane Barnard and Miwa Natsuki of Urban Kick had a great session on the do’s and don’ts of starting your own business.
So today I found myself crawling through a tiny window.
Yes, it’s true. CRAWLING THROUGH A TINY WINDOW.
My friend locked her keys in the house and a locksmith would take more than an hour. So we said, “hey, we can do this”. Any woman in her 40’s can crawl through a window for Pete’s sake. Right? What could be so hard about that?
Well, I’ll tell you. My friend is about 5’8” and I’m 5’, so by default I became the window ninja. She found a ladder and some tools in the open shed while I looked for an open window.
So I was thinking about the way we train. I think the biggest problem with the way most people train is that they do what they like, but don't do much of the things they don't. For instance, if you love to jog, but hate strength training, generally we jog much more than train with weights! The same thing happens the other way around as well.
So the other day I was talking to a client about exercise and the way it can make you feel not only better physically, but mentally as well. My point was that studies show that exercise is AS effective as a chemical anti-depressant.
You've probably heard it before. It goes something like this..."If you want to lose a few pounds you need to do long, slow, steady-state aerobic exercise in the fat burning zone." Well, if you know me then you know I love debunking fitness myths, busting excuses and not playing nice with the latest weight lose "gimmicks"
Let’s get real. 4 minute abs doesn’t mean you will get a six pack in 4 minutes. It means it is a 4 minute workout targeting your abdominal muscles. If you want a six pack or a flat tummy you need to do at least two things. Develop strong, tight abdominal muscles and shed excess fat in and around your abdomen. Before starting a new exercise program or diet of the week, ask yourself, am I really ready to change my lifestyle? Because that’s exactly what it’s going to take to reach your goal.
Ok…so you’ve finally broken down and realized the benefits of adding resistance training to your workout routine. Good for you!! You’ll increase bone density, increase tissue strength, increase metabolism, endurance, power and decrease body fat. Wow!! Sign me up! But the problem is, beginners aren’t really sure where to start. I mean c’mon…reps, sets, intensity, tempo, training variables…what’s it all mean?
Drink plenty of water every day.Take a multivitamin & fish oil supplement every day.Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full.Focus on lean meats & veggies, nuts & seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar.Fad diets do not work. They may at first, but in the end, you'll gain the weight back and more. No diet will do what eating clean and healthy does.See last tip.
