It's that time of year again...Halloween! Little goblins will soon be visiting my door asking for treats. And I can't wait! You see, Halloween brings back the joy of childhood for me. Thinking I was really the costumed creature I was made up to be. (Although I think I'll forget about the year I was a grape. Long story and poor choice by our classroom teacher for a themed class costume of fruit! Thanks Aunty!). And let's not forget, the candy! I still remember the house that gave out full size candy bars! Halloween was always full of a little bit of candy, mystery and mischief.

Dramatic Wellness with Megan Merchant
Yes, I am deathly afraid of consuming fresh fish.  Maybe it is a lineage from Iowa (cows, pigs and chickens galore, although my grandparents also fish and eat trout).  Maybe it is growing up and living in New Mexico (I can't see the ocean!).  But my husband and daughter love salmon, I have twice over the past 15 years tried and enjoyed it, and I could not STAND another year being anxious about diving into a new but also healthy food habit.

For most people, weekends usually involve a few alcoholic beverages and some pretty unhealthy food choices. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to avoid allowing a bad diet weekend to set you back.

From the IHFA - Jonathan Glick - BS-ESS, ACE-CPT
While I will fail to provide you with a specific answer, I have a common sense test! Any diet must answer yes to all the following questions to pass:1) Is it balanced? A diet that recommends too high (or low) of any one macro-nutrient (fat, carbohydrate, protein, etc) doesn’t pass this test.2) Does it allow moderation of all foods? A glass of wine? Sure. A bottle every day? No. Ice cream as an occasional treat? Why not. Ice cream as a daily meal replacement? No.

As of Sunday, June 10, 2012 I am the proud owner of the title ‘Fitness Nutrition Specialist’ which is a certification through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). As such, I can voice my opinion on food choices and vitamins and supplements with greater depth of knowledge than I could before.  I have studied for several months, biting my way through a nutrition textbook of prodigious dimensions while having a few reminders of my organic chemistry class in school.

Small changes eventually lead to a healthy lifestyle
Eat-Clean Diet by Tosca Reno…  The kids love this one! Modified some. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and cook ground turkey, venison or extra lean hormorne/antibiotic free hamburger meat, carrots, onion and garlic until browned.  Add chicken or vegetable stock, tomatoes, quinoa ziti pasta and basil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until pasta is al dente.
