How Eye Doctors Conduct Eye Exams

By Annie Johnson

Our sense of sight is such a vital sense that its quality must be gaged when we are to start in any institution. Whether we are enrolling in a new school or starting a new job, the quality of our vision is determined for us to be able to perform without any hindrances in our ability to see. Our vision is tested by Eye Doctors through a comprehensive exam that determines our current ability to see and if any corrective eyewear is necessary. For those about to take their first eye exam, here are a few things that you can expect to occur.

Eye exams have been crafted by eye professionals to determine several aspects of one’s vision and eye health. This exam is also capable of detecting diseases of the eye. Aside from being required for school and employment, the exam is also done to help detect eye problems at an early stage. Early detection can help cure such diseases since they have yet to advance to a worse case. For those with corrective eyewear, eye exams in Pittsburgh are also required for them to know their current vision status and determine if they need any improvements with their current eyewear.

For first-timers, they can expect to be asked first about their vision history and current status. Typical questions include any past issues with their vision, recurring eye diseases in the family, and any recent issues related to their eyes or their vision. Their answers can help the eye doctor know if they are at risk for any eye problems in the future.

After asking questions about the patient, the Eye Doctor then proceeds to the series of tests that comprise the eye exam itself. A few of these tests include the following:

  1. Muscle test – for the eye doctor to gauge your eye muscle movement, he makes you look at a moving object such as a pen or light. This test determines strength in muscle movement and coordination.
  2. Visual Acuity test – Vision clarity is one of the most significant aspects of sight. This is determined by letting a patient read letters of the alphabet of decreasing the size (the Snellen Chart) from a certain distance using one eye at a time. The Doctor may also test your ability to see at a nearer distance.
  3. Refraction test – Once the Doctor deems that you need prescriptive eyewear, he makes use of a device with various lenses that can fit onto a frame. He tries different combinations of these lenses to determine the correct grade to prescribe to you when you purchase your eyewear. This eyewear is specially designed to correct errors in the eye’s refractive ability to form an image on the back of the eye which is caused by its inability to focus light correctly.

After the eye exam, the Eye Doctor shares with you the result which includes the current state of your vision, any issues regarding eye health, and he will also prescribe eyewear for you if needed. You must heed his advice carefully to protect your vision and prevent any more damage to your vision in the future.

An Eye exam is an all-in-one test that determines all aspects of your current eye health and vision. If you wish to safeguard your vision for more years to come, ensure that the eye exam is one that you will not miss in your next overall physical assessment.
